Garden of Seven Stones, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Saturday, 5 July, 2025
This soundscape takes you to the shores of Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The Garden of the Seven Stones was the departure point in the story of The Great Fleet, the seven vaka/waka many Māori believed sailed out into the Pacific Ocean and eventually landed on what would become known as Aotearoa New Zealand.Yes, this episode is not a soundscape from Aotearoa! But Aotearoa has a long connection with the Cook Islands and this specific location is very important to many Māori, please enjoy the sounds of the ocean crashing onto the reef in the Avana Passage. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade describes the Cook Islands as 'a self-governing state in 'free association' with New Zealand.'
