Episode 470
Thursday, 9 July, 2026

Smoking a pack of 20 cigarettes a day costs over £5,300 annually according to stop smoking charities. The average price of a standard 20-pack is around £16.45, while 30g of rolling tobacco averages £25.25. Nationally, smoking costs society in England £44.8 billion annually through healthcare, lost productivity, and social care.  Personal Cost Breakdown On an individual level, the amount you spend adds up extremely fast. Based on a standard 20-pack at today's prices:  10 cigarettes a day: Approx. £2,646 to £3,000 per year 20 cigarettes a day (one pack): Approx. £5,292 to £6,000 per year 40 cigarettes a day: Over £10,500 per year  Economic and Health Impact Despite the heavy taxes placed on tobacco products, the total societal and financial damage caused by smoking far outweighs the revenue raised. To Society: Smoking costs England £44.8 billion each year. This figure includes £27.8 billion in lost economic productivity, £14.8 billion in social care, £1.8 billion in NHS healthcare costs, and £383 million in fire damages.  Smoking a pack of 20 cigarettes a day costs over £5,300 annually. You can download the official PDF document on the government website at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-renters-rights-act-information-sheet-2026 You must serve the actual document to your tenants, in person, by post or email, and not just send them the link. Landlords should keep a record and obtain a receipt or acknowledgement or proof of service. Solicitors have reported a wave of Section 21 notices being served on tenants prior to the deadline when ‘no fault evictions’ will no longer apply, according to the Guardian. Although successive governments seem to be doing their best to encourage the big corporate landlords and drive small landlords out of business (Section 24, licensing, increased red tape etc), they still need the estimated 2 million private buy-to-let property landlords.  See interview with Chartered Accountant and Tax Specialist - https://youtu.be/aMuGs_ek17s #propertyinvestment #section24landlordtax #moneytips #buytoletlandlord #section21eviction #rentersrightsact2026 #smokingcost #indexfunds #pensionfunds #investing
