As the entire world has been put on hold due to the pandemic, the future of the UK dance industry is as brittle as ever. Cuts to the Arts have been constant since 2010, and as world-wide recession is now imminent due to Covid-19, there is little chance that austerity measures will end any time soon. National Theatre and Sadlers Wells are amongst the many organisations that have been streaming theatre productions on their websites for people to enjoy whilst on lockdown. But whilst productions are posted online, theatres and those working for them are in a disaster zone. Freelance dancers and artists across the country are out of work, and the prospects of returning any time soon are slim. Albeit positive that art is pulling people through this time, it will be interesting to see how it comes out the other side. Will theatres maintain ticket sales? Will artists still have jobs? Will we learn from this period of accessible art, or will we simply revert back to many aspects only being accessible to a minority? Through extensive research and a wide range of conversations, the past six weeks have been spent analysing the current state of the UK dance industry, and how it may look over the next few months and years.
