The Dead Husband: Freed from the Law to Be Married to Christ

In this Bible lesson, Brother Scott Mitchell teaches on the meaning of The Dead Husband, a powerful analogy from Romans 7. Just as a widow is freed from her husband’s law at his death, believers are set free from the law through the body of Christ to be joined to Him in grace. Scott shows how the law, represented by Ruth’s late husband Mahlon, was weak and unable to bring righteousness. In contrast, Boaz—who represents Christ—redeemed Ruth, a type of the Gentile church. Through this beautiful picture, Scripture reveals that believers are no longer bound by the old covenant but are made alive in Christ. Ruth and Boaz as Types: Ruth, a Gentile, pictures the church; Boaz pictures Christ the Redeemer. The nearer kinsman, representing religious Israel, would mi not redeem her, but Boaz could (Ruth 4:1–6). Israel’s Rejection of Christ: The Sadducees’ reliance on the law revealed their unbelief, but Jesus declared Himself the God of the living (Matthew 22:23–30). Freedom in Christ: The law revealed sin but could not save. Christ fulfilled the law and nailed it to His cross (Colossians 2:13–14). The Mystery of Marriage: Believers are joined to Christ, not by works of the law, but by grace through faith (Ephesians 5:30–32; 2 Corinthians 11:2). Takeaway Salvation cannot come through the works of the law, for the law was weak through the flesh. Only through Christ’s death and resurrection are we redeemed, justified, and free.
