Ternyata kesetaraan Gender telah dikenal sejak lama di zaman Kerajaan Bugis. Dalam buku History of Java (1817), Thomas Standford Raffles mencatat kesan kagum akan peran perempuan Bugis dalam masyarakatnya “The Women are held in more esteem than could be expected from the state of civilization in general and undergo bone of those severe hardships, privations or labours that restrict fecundity in other parts of the world (perempuan Bugis-Makassar menempati posisi yang lebih terhormat daripada yang disangkakan, mereka tidak mengalami tindak kekerasan, pelanggaran privacy atau dipekerjakan paksa sehingga membatasi aktivitas/kesuburan mereka, dibanding yang dialami kaumnya di belahan dunia lain (Raffles, History of Java)
