Walk & Talk: Summer Break
Thursday, 30 July, 2026

NOTE: This episode was recorded while I was on a walk with my dogs so you will hear “neighborhood noise” — planes, cars, poop bags, etc. The written portion of this article is a lightly edited transcript, so it may seem more informal than usual.Alright. Hello and welcome to The Aligned Actor Podcast. I’m Amy Schloerb, your friendly fellow actor and mindfulness and mindset coach. And this is the podcast where I offer practical mindfulness tools and mindset shifts to help us all thrive in our full actor lives. Because we deserve to thrive in our full actor lives. The acting business is a roller coaster. It’s full of ups and downs, twists and turns. We never know what’s coming next. We will only survive if we are taking care of our bodies, our minds, and our spirits and making sure that we are fortifying our nervous systems because the entertainment industry likes to wreak havoc on our nervous systems. And so this is the podcast where I try to help us all handle all of that muck and turmoil and trials and tribulations with as much grace and self-compassion, inner kindness and humor and love and laughter and light and all the stuff as possible. For those of you who are consuming this content on Substack (or probably on YouTube as well) you may notice there’s a big difference. There’s no face! There’s no video! Because this is an impromptu episode that I am recording while I’m out on a walk with my dogs. And you might hear me rustling with a poop bag at the moment, because that’s what happens when you’re out on a walk with dogs. Sometimes they have to go 10-2.This is live and unfiltered, folks. Fun times. I’m recording this episode because, like I said, it’s an impromptu episode. I had all these plans for this summer where we were going to do this deep dive on mindfulness, and we still are. We just got through all of the content on the basics of mindfulness. What it is, how to do it. I’ve been giving you practices that you can use and incorporate into your life, and I was about to get into the benefits of mindfulness and why this matters to actors so much. And truth be told, I had recorded all of that content before the summer while my child was still in school. And I thought, “Okay, clearly at times I’m going to find times to step away and record more content.” And that just has not happened because for whatever reason, Summer mode got activated in my mom body. When I have some free time, I am reading a book. The motivation on work kind of went to a standstill this summer, which I think is okay and I actually think is really good. It’s actually what I want to talk about in this episode. I want to talk about how sometimes as actors we feel like we gotta keep going. All the time. There’s always something new, something different, something we could tweak, something we could do better, or different, or more for our careers. But I don’t want us to neglect or underestimate the power of rest, the power of vegging out, the power of reading a book, the power of creative dormancy, the power of just relaxing, and letting life just be what it is in this moment. Because these seasons don’t last forever. They come and they go. Just stopping every once in a while, as Ferris Bueller would say, “If you don’t slow down and look around every once in a while, you’re going to miss your life.” (Something like that, paraphrased.)We need to allow ourselves that time. And I’m actually really glad that I have allowed myself that time this summer. I’ve been spending some really great time with my kid. Like I said, I’ve been reading, I’ve been relaxing, and it’s been very restorative and very helpful. And I think we all need that at times as actors. So that’s really what I wanted to jump on here and let you know about. First off, to know we’re doing a little bit of a hiatus here at The Aligned Actor podcast slash Substack. So don’t expect more content on mindfulness until probably the end of August, I would say. Maybe even September. I’m not exactly sure. Maybe I’ll do another one of these little episodes on some kind of idea. I’m not really sure about that either. I’m kind of going with the flow at the moment. I hope you are enjoying your summer as well. And if you’re not, if something has been slow or not to your liking or whatever the case may be, I want you to know that this too shall pass, which I know sounds trite, but it’s true.Mindfulness teaches us that everything is temporary. Impermanence is really the only permanent thing. Everything changes. Everything flows. Nothing stays the same forever. It just can’t. That’s not realistic. That’s not life. So if this summer has been challenging for you, then my heart goes out to you and I see you.And certainly there have been aspects of this summer for me that have been very challenging as well. So I definitely do see you. I feel you. But know that this too shall pass. There will be another side. We will get through it. And we will continue on.I’m going to go back to enjoying this nice day. It’s actually got a nice breeze here. It’s not too hot. I thought it was going to be really hot when I stepped outside today for this walk with my doggies, but it’s not so bad.So we’re going to enjoy our walk and I hope that you enjoy your day.Thank you so much for joining me!
