Artist Anna Rubin on Art in the Sky
Monday, 10 August, 2026
Anna Rubin’s practice combines making, material knowledge, and the laws of flight. Her kites are made from foil emergency blankets, a material designed to protect against wind, rain, and cold, repurposed here in a sculptural form. The title of this work is drawn from the book, Where the Wild Winds Are by Nick Hunt. Kites operates between tradition and technology, art and freedom. Their construction relies on both precise knowledge and creative intuition and an understanding of materials, wind behaviour and aerodynamics shapes each work. For Rubin, kite building is a personal and poetic process. Ideas may begin with landscapes, encounters or texts, but the work is only completed in flight. As the kite enters the air, it becomes part of the landscape, extending the artist’s sense of space, place and self. Anna Rubin lives and works in Austria. Mae Anna Rubin yn cyfuno gwneud pethau, gwybodaeth faterol a gwyddoniaeth hedfan yn ei gwaith. Mae’n gwneud barcutiaid o ddeunydd blancedi ffoil ar gyfer argyfyngau, sydd â’r nod o amddiffyn rhag y gwynt, y glaw a’r oerfel, wedi’i addasu yma ar ffurf gerfluniol. Mae teitl y gwaith hwn yn deillio o’r llyfr Where the Wild Winds Are gan Nick Hunt. Mae barcutiaid yn gweithredu rhwng traddodiad a thechnoleg, celf a rhyddid. Mae adeiladu barcutiaid yn dibynnu ar wybodaeth fanwl a greddf greadigol, ac mae dealltwriaeth o ddeunyddiau, ymddygiad y gwynt ac aerodynameg yn dylanwadu ar bob darn o waith. I Rubin, mae adeiladu barcutiaid yn broses bersonol a barddonol. Gall syniadau ddechrau gyda thirweddau, cyfarfodydd neu destunau, ond dim ond wrth hedfan y caiff y gwaith ei gwblhau. Wrth i’r barcud gyrraedd yr awyr, mae’n rhan o’r dirwedd, gan gysylltu’r artist, yr awyr a’r byd o’n cwmpas. Mae Anna Rubin yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Awstria.
