Toki Ukamea: The story of William MarinerAuthor: Richard Wolfgramm
In 2012, a Tongan man by the name of Tevita Moala came upon the remains of a sunken ship off the coast of Foa, Ha'apai in the Kingdom of Tonga. It was determined that this was the remains of the Port au Prince, a vessel registered to England. How did it get to Tonga and why was it sitting on the bottom of the ocean. This podcast is the fascinating story of the cabin clerk, a young boy by the name of William Mariner, one of the survivors of the Port au Prince who lived in Tonga from 1806 to 1810. 21 Years Later: A Letter from Mafihape
Saturday, 31 December, 2022
In 2007, an online listing for a unique copy of Mariner's account was discovered in a bookstore in Canada. In the blank pages in the back of this copy was a letter, a transcription of a letter written in Tongan and addressed to a William Mariner. The book, it turned out, once belonged to Mariner's daughter and the letter in the back pages was transcribed from an actual letter that was delivered to Mariner from Mafihape.
