This is the story of the most important racing engine ever built and how it lied to history for more than 70 years. In 1912 Peugeot built a racing engine called the L76. It was a groundbreaking piece of engineering and the first engine to use a hemispherical head, dual overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder at the same time. It dominated racing from the moment it showed up, but there was a plot twist. A journalist made a speculative report about the engine in 1912 and his claims would go on to take new life and spawn 70 years of false reporting on an engine few people had ever seen and no one was left alive to talk about.
