The track peaked at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. Allison used his middle name, Ivan, to step out from behind the drum kit and take the lead vocals. Allison heard the original track, titled "Wild One," written and performed by Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe during a 1958 tour. The recording features Jerry Allison on vocals, Buddy Holly on rhythm guitar, Joe B. Mauldin on bass, and backing vocals by The Roses.
