The Bible lies at the heart of the Reformed tradition. But how it should be heard, read, and lived has been debated from the Reformation to our own day. Yale Divinity professor Bruce Gordon leads us in a three-part series exploring how different voices in the Protestant story have wrestled with Scripture, found inspiration in it, and sometimes fiercely disagreed about what it means. Their struggles are not just part of history; they speak directly to us today, inviting us to think again about how God’s Word shapes our faith, our communities, and our daily lives. Bruce Gordon, a native of Canada, is the Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale Divinity School, where he also teaches in the Department of History and the Humanities Program. Before joining Yale, he was Professor of History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. His research focuses on the Reformation and its legacy, the history of the Bible and biblical cultures, and the history of dying and death. His publications include Calvin (Yale University Press, 2009), The Christian Institutes of John Calvin (Princeton University Press, 2016), and Huldrych Zwingli: God’s Armed Prophet (Yale University Press, 2021). Most recently, he is the author of The Bible: A Global History (Basic Books, 2024), named one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year. He lives in Vermont with his wife, Rona, and their rescue dog, Dougal.
