The Lost Flight - A Bermuda Triangle Story

On December 5, 1945, five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale for a three-hour exercise called “Navigation Problem Number One,” and the hop went as smoothly as the previous 18 that day. The leader, Lt. Charles Taylor, was an experienced aviator with around 2,500 hours and a Pacific combat tour behind him. Then they got lost. The flight became hopelessly disoriented and its radio transmissions grew fainter as it drifted out to sea. Ground stations could hear the radio chatter growing more anxious as the afternoon wore on. The National Archives account adds the detail that gives me chills: the sun set, the weather deteriorated, and the flight was still lost, now critically low on fuel. A Martin PBM Mariner flying boat was sent to search, and it radioed once and was never seen again, with all 13 aboard6 Aircraft, 27 men, all disappeared on one stormy night.
