It involves a gambler named Jim Smiley, a frog named Dan'l Webster, and a stranger who knows exactly how to cheat a cheater.Mark Twain wrote this in 1865, and it is pure American absurdity — a tall tale told in bars, on porches, in rooms where the fire is high and nobody checks the facts. No secret meaning, no hidden pattern, no demon in the corner. Just a man, a frog, and the absolute certainty that human gullibility is infinite.I read this one with a smile.
