The Ad Undergrad Podcast

The Path of the Practitioner

Author: StudioPod Media

Ad Undergrad was created to give students, recent grads and those switching industries the opportunity to learn about advertising outside the classroom and to provide career advice through the paths of the practitioners. Katie Moy and I (Julian Lewis) met during our first agency gig post college, and have been working in the industry for almost 15 years. As an Adjunct Professor of Advertising, I had Katie guest speak in my class; we identified that students were most engaged when industry professionals joined the class and shared their stories. We aim to make this more than a podcast, unlocking actionable insights and resources for students, recent grads and those switching industries to take the reins early in their careers. Mentorship in the Moment with Kim DeRuby
Episode 14
Tuesday, 29 December, 2020

Welcome to the Ad Undergrad Podcast! A show where Katie Moy and Julian Lewis sit down with marketing practitioners to share their experiences, insights and tips from the industry. The Ad Undergrad Podcast was created to give students, recent grads and those switching industries the opportunity to learn about advertising outside the classroom and provide career advice through the paths of practitioners.Being an undergrad in a world of uncertainty is challenging, but fortunately, there are plenty of practitioners out there that are willing to mentor you in your career. In this episode, Julian and Katie are joined by Kim DeRuby, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Keuka College, to chat about the importance of appreciating a good challenge, enjoying unexpected crossroads in your career journey, and the concept of mentorship in the moment. In the marketing community, we all bring something to the table, and Kim encourages everyone to learn together and cultivate valuable two-way relationships. Tune in and learn why you should never be afraid to reach out to people you admire in the industry. Jump straight into:(01:22) - How marketing became ideal for Kim’s travelling ambitions - “I found there was one college, SUNY Plattsburgh up on the Northern border to Canada that had an international marketing degree. And that was it, that was the only college I applied to, and sure enough, that is the college I went to.”(08:25) - The inevitable crossroad: How having a family doesn’t have to kill your career - “It's very, very important to build, cultivate, and stay in touch with your network.”(12:05) - What makes marketing so irresistible for certain individuals - “I have that personality where I have a desire to be challenged constantly. I don't like to get too comfortable.”(15:56) - How mentors are transforming entire generations of future marketers - “All of my activities, discussions, assignments revolve around applying the material to themselves because they're all marketers.”(25:58) - Why you should reach out to professionals and build a strong network - “Most people want to give back, they want to pay it forward, they want to share their insights and their experience with the next generation.”ResourcesConnect with Kim through LinkedInAdweek Executive Mentor ProgramAd Undergrad is a podcast hosted by Katie Moy and Julian Lewis.
