What if four simple words could change the way your child sees themselves? "I see in you..." As parents, we spend a lot of time telling our kids what to do, correcting their mistakes, and helping them improve. But how often do we intentionally tell them the good things we see in them? Your children need more than correction and instruction. They need encouragement. They need affirmation. They need to know that you recognize their strengths, character, abilities, and God-given potential. And sometimes they need you to see something in them before they can see it in themselves. In Episode 317 of the Family Meeting Podcast, Thomas and Lysandra Osterkamp discuss the power of "I See in You" statements and how intentionally speaking positive, specific words into your children's lives can strengthen their confidence, shape their identity, and deepen your parent-child relationship. Instead of simply saying, "Good job!" or "I'm proud of you," imagine telling your child: "I see in you someone who cares deeply about others." "I see in you a leader who is willing to do what's right." "I see in you someone who doesn't give up when things get difficult." "I see in you someone God can use to make a difference." These statements help children recognize the qualities you're noticing in their lives. When your encouragement is specific and genuine, your words can become a powerful influence on how they understand themselves. Instead of saying, "You're a great kid," tell them, "I see in you someone who notices when other people are hurting. I saw how you helped your friend yesterday, and that showed me the compassion you have for others." Your children need discipline. They need correction. They need guidance. But they also need someone who consistently notices the good in them. Your words today can help shape what your children believe about themselves tomorrow.
