Quirky History of the Indy 500
Sunday, 18 October, 2026

Originally aired 06/20/2026. Nelson explores quirky and little-known history related to the world-famous Indy 500. In November 1963, a woman race driver took laps around the racetrack as a promotional stunt, long before Janet Guthrie blazed a trail in 1977 as the first woman to compete in the Indy 500. Back in 1913, a French driver won a race, consuming Champagne as he completed at high speeds. These stories and others were shared in an exhibit, "The Speedway's Attic", at the Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis. Nelson's guest is the exhibit's creator, veteran journalist Will Higgins.
