#488 You Don't Need to Be Fixed, You Need to Be Reintegrated: A Therapist's Guide to Veteran Transition | Uko Okon
Episode 488
Tuesday, 21 July, 2026

Most people assume the hardest part of leaving the military is finding a job or adjusting to a 9-to-5 schedule. Uko Okon, an Army infantry veteran with eight and a half years of active-duty service and now a licensed therapist in Arizona, says that's not it at all. In this episode of Ideas & Impact, host Jeremy Jones talks with Uko, founder of Verdant Therapy and Wellness, about the real drivers of veteran struggle after service: the loss of tribe, purpose, and identity that the military spent years building. Uko walks through why core values work, identifying what was meaningful about military service and translating it into civilian life, is the foundation of helping veterans reconnect with purpose. He explains why organizations often mistake a veteran's directness or work ethic for a problem instead of an asset, and why stereotyping every behavior change as PTSD does more harm than good. Therapy, Uko argues, isn't about starting over; it's an evolution of the discipline and habits veterans already have.   The conversation closes with practical guidance for military families: how to recognize the early signs of struggle (anger, withdrawal, silence), and why education and open communication work far better than ultimatums when encouraging a veteran to seek help.   Whether you're a veteran navigating civilian life, a family member trying to support one, or an employer working with veteran talent, this episode reframes what support should actually look like.   Learn more about Uko at: verdanttherapyandwellness.com Get the show notes for this episode here: askjeremyjones.com/podcast
