Dr. Gominak shares how her work as a neurologist with headache patients unexpectedly led her into sleep research after discovering that many young, otherwise healthy women had abnormal sleep studies even when they did not have sleep apnea. She explains why sleep studies can be overly reductive when they focus only on apnea, while missing deeper issues with REM sleep, deep sleep, paralysis, repair, and brainstem function. Leigh Ann and Dr. Gominak discuss the role of vitamin D as a hormone, why blood levels may matter more than generic dosing, and how bringing vitamin D levels up helped some patients sleep better before later revealing deeper B vitamin and microbiome-related issues.
