Welcome to the seventinth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers sit down to discuss Archie Mayo's film Black Legion, starring one of their favourite actors Humphrey Bogart. This was in the early days of Bogart's career, and he wouldn't blow up as an actor and as a movie star until 1941 with High Sierra. He reunites with Archie Mayo who directed him in The Petrified Forest, for this hard-hitting drama set in the Midwestern parts of the United States. Frank Taylor (Bogart) is a blue collar factory worker who is expecting a promotion any day now. When he is passed over for a younger Polish immigrant, it takes a toll on Frank. He becomes bitter and mean. He is influenced to join a secret hate group called the Black Legion. Being part of the group alienates everyone from Frank. His family and friends. It all builds to a tragic conclusion. The Black Legion were a faction of the Klu Klux Klan. They were active in the 1920s and 1930s, they grew to prominence in the Great Depression. The film is based on the real life kidnapping and murder of a Work Progress Administration organiser: Charles S. Poole. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK.
