#195 - The One With Dos Gabachos
Friday, 12 April, 2024
Welcome back to the Eat Local New York Podcast. This week I am talking with David and Richard from Dos Gabachos. Here is more about them from the Dos Gabachos website: "Over a decade ago three future friends met at a bar in downtown Los Angeles. David coming from Northern California, Richard, from New York, and Victor from Mexico City. David & Richard were both Mixologists working behind the bar to make a living along with doing professional photography. Victor, a bar patron, was doing international business between Los Angeles and Mexico City. Through the years they became good friends and started traveling with Victor to Mexico City to learn and experience the culture. It was there when they first discovered Mezcal and fell in love. In awe of the spirit and wanting to learn more, they started their travels to Oaxaca. In search of Mezcal, they were introduced to different Mezcaleros and their families for some unforgettable and hospitable experiences. They learned firsthand about the process of producing Mezcal and had the opportunity to taste some of the finest Mezcal such as Espadín, Tobalá, Mexicano, Tepeztate, Pechuga, Tepextate, Cuixe, and Jabalí, straight from the distill. This was the beginning of their understanding that Mezcal was much more than a spirit, but that it was a heritage, tradition, and way of life. Noticing a lack of popularity back home in the states, they started asking friends and people they knew if they were aware of Mezcal and mostly were told no. They felt that people were missing out and began to dream about bringing Mezcal to Los Angeles so Americans could taste this magical spirit and learn about the heritage of Oaxaca and Mexico. Today, they continue their travels to Mexico and Oaxaca for further Mezcal education, and to bring their story to life through the lens of their cameras. They promise to continue documenting their experiences to reveal to you the captivating Mexican culture that they cherish and love."
