The show aired from 1997 to 2003, and has remained popular in the years since. Buffy was a groundbreaking show for its time, featuring a female lead character who was not just one of many pretty faces or one of many damsels in distress. The show follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), a high school student chosen by fate to battle evil forces as The Slayer. She is aided by her Watcher, Rupert Giles (Anthony Head), who teaches her about the history of vampires and other supernatural creatures that inhabit the Earth; her mother's new husband, Hank Summers (Danny Strong); and her best friends Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon).
