E125: The Intellectual Domain of PMOS
Friday, 30 October, 2026
Physicians have been describing PMOS for thousands of years. Yet the “cysts” that gave the condition its original name were never really cysts. They are follicles stuck partway through development, a misreading that came from whatever the latest technology could show. In the intellectual domain of PMOS, Kirtly Jones, MD, and Katie Ward, PhD, tackle the question: what is the difference between a disease and a syndrome? They trace how our understanding of PMOS has changed, from ancient observations and the wedge resection surgery of the 1930s, through ultrasound, to the diagnostic criteria set in 1990 and 2003. They also discuss who should care for a condition that spans the ovary, the pancreas, the skin, and the mood.
