I'm out in Long Island with my dearest friends, where I go to my meetings a few times a week and everyone knows it. One Sunday night at dinner, I said I had to leave early for a second meeting, and as I got up, my best friend Jason quietly pulled me aside. He asked if everything was okay, said he'd noticed that was two meetings that day, and put his hand on his heart: I just wanted to check in with you. I didn't feel judged for a second. I felt loved. It turned out I was the speaker that night, so he was wrong, and it didn't matter at all. It was a masterclass in how to check on someone you love. This is an episode about the difference between checking up on someone and getting curious, why silence and confrontation both miss, and how to ask the real question with an open hand.
